The 2026 Malta National Baseball League came down to a decisive Game 7 between the Mustangs and the Mellieħa Northenders, with the Mustangs coming away victorious after a tense and hard-fought final showdown.
The Mustangs sent Kevin Spiteri to the mound as the starting pitcher, where he delivered four strong innings while allowing just one earned run. Andres Susarra came in relief and closed out the game despite heavy pressure late on, conceding two earned runs. Mellieħa countered with Keith Bartolo, who pitched five innings and allowed three earned runs, before Michael Bartolo took over in relief during the sixth inning and allowed two earned runs.

The Mustangs struck first in the bottom of the opening inning. Gabriel Di Sabatino worked a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball before Jan Harm Visser lined a sharp single to bring home the first run of the game and give the Mustangs an early 1-0 lead.

The game remained tight throughout the middle innings. In the top of the fourth, Mellieħa loaded the bases with two outs and tied the game with a clutch RBI single. As Mellieha’s offense continued to apply pressure, the Mustangs’ defense held its ground and did not allow any more runs to score in that inning.

The Mustangs answered immediately in the bottom of the fifth inning. With a runner on first base, Kevin Spiteri drove a line drive into the gap for an RBI triple to restore the lead. Moments later, he dashed home during a rundown situation after a runner was caught in a pickle, extending the Mustangs advantage to 3-1.

The Mustangs added crucial insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when Andres Susarra came through with a bases-loaded two-RBI single to stretch the lead further.
Mellieħa refused to back down and mounted one final push in the top of the seventh inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, the pressure was firmly on Susarra. He responded with a huge strikeout for the first out before Carmelo Martini singled to drive in a run. A ground ball by Steven Grima then brought in another run despite recording the out at first base.

The drama continued as Carmelo Martini was caught in a pickle at second base. During the rundown another run crossed the plate, but the Mustangs eventually completed the final out of the championship series, sealing the victory and being crowned 2026 Malta National Baseball League Champions.
