Fresh off a late inning rally in the 1st game, the Mellieha Northenders faced off for the second time against the Sliema Patriots. This time, it was the Mellieha Northenders who started off hot! A 3-run home run by Matt Borg in the second inning gave Mellieha an early 3-1 lead. Another 3-run home run from Masashi Suzuki in the 3rd inning then gave the Northenders a 5-run cushion.
The Sliema Patriots made a remarkable comeback in the 5th inning, making this a 1-run ball game. The Northenders scored 2 insurance runs in the top of the 6th which were just enough to hold off another late rally by the Patriots.
In such a close win, Mellieha’s defense shined immensely. Third baseman Matt Borg made impressive plays at the hot corner, including a 5-4-3 double play, earning him MVP of the game. Shortstop Michael Bartolo of Mellieha made the last out with an amazing diving catch down the 3rd base line which secured the win in dramatic fashion!
After this weekend’s series, both teams remain tied at 1st place with 10 wins each.
