In the second game of a thrilling double-header, the Sliema Patriots and Mellieha Northenders matched up in a close 2-run ballgame. Mellieha started off in style with a grand slam from Michael Bartolo in the 1st inning, netting the Northenders 4 runs. Solid defensive efforts from both teams kept each other in check, allowing only 2 runs in the next couple of innings.
Trailing 2-6 in the bottom of the 3rd inning, the Patriots tied the game with a 4-run inning of their own. Jorge Acosta’s home run and Alvin Barroso’s 4 RBI day proved to be the difference makers for the Patriots as they proceeded to take a 3-run lead into the 7th inning.
The game was far from over though. Mellieha turned the game around with a big 5-run 7th inning, giving them a slim 2 run lead heading into the bottom of the 7th inning. Clutch defensive plays by outfielder Masashi Suzuki and MVP shortstop Michael Bartolo then secured an important win for Mellieha with a score of 15-13.
After this pivotal weekend series, Mellieha secured 1st place in the standings.
