The National Slowpitch League season got off to a thrilling start on Saturday, as the Mellieha Northenders edged out the Brewers in a dramatic 14–13 extra-innings encounter in one of the most exciting games of the opening round.
The Northenders set the tone early, scoring five runs in the opening inning to put immediate pressure on the Brewers. Ryan Cassar led the charge with an outstanding all-round display, earning Most Valuable Player honours after going a perfect 4-for-4 with five RBIs, while also contributing solidly on the field. Cassar was well supported by his team mates Steven Grima and Michael Bartolo, who added further firepower with a home run each. Bartolo also delivered an excellent defensive performance, recording seven outs and no errors providing stability in key moments.

Despite trailing by more than six runs, the Brewers showed great character and determination to fight their way back into the contest. Emilio Rivas played a pivotal role in the comeback, collecting two triples and driving in five runs, while Carmelo Martini impressed at both ends of the field with two crucial double plays and reaching safely in all of his plate appearances.
As the game entered the later innings, both teams traded runs in a tense battle of nerves, with momentum swinging back and forth. The Brewers’ late rally eventually forced the contest into extra innings, setting up a dramatic conclusion.
In the decisive extra frame, the Northenders showed composure under pressure. Smart baserunning, disciplined hitting, and strong teamwork allowed them to score the winning run and seal a memorable 14–13 victory.
