The U/13 National Baseball League kicked off its season with the Mustangs hosting Mellieha in what turned out to be a well-rounded performance from the home team.
Amy Summer Elliot took the mound for the Mustangs and got off to a strong start, striking out all three Mellieha batters in the first inning while allowing just one walk. The Mustangs’ offense immediately got to work shortly after as Liam Brincat drew a walk and was soon brought home by a well-struck triple from Elliot. Moments later, Samuel Moreno connected on a 2-run homer to give the Mustangs a 3–0 lead. Mellieha’s starting pitcher, Cody Tabone, regrouped and limited the 1st inning damage to 3 runs.
The second inning saw Mellieha’s offense trying to respond, but Elliot stayed in control, shutting down the side once again and continuing her impressive outing. On the other side, Mellieha made a pitching change, bringing in Cole Bartolo in relief, who managed to quiet the Mustangs’ bats and kept the second inning scoreless for both sides.
With the score still 3–0, the Mustangs brought in Matteo Ciappara to pitch the top of the third to hold the lead. As Mellieha got runners in scoring position, Ciappara stayed composed and closed out the inning without giving up any runs, maintaining the Mustangs’ shutout.
In the bottom of the third inning, Lucia Zhang took over pitching duties for Mellieha to face the heart of the Mustangs order. It was a tall task as Liam Brincat led off the inning with a solo home run to extend the lead. Giulio Micallef and Moreno both singled to get on base, setting the stage for Joseph Bzezi, who drove in a run with an RBI double. With runners still in scoring position, Benjamin Pace followed up with a clutch two-run single to bring them both home, wrapping up a convincing 7-0 win for the Mustangs.
